A Gentle Introduction to Machine Learning for Humanists: Lacemaking and AI

Track

Duration
50 minutes

Ever since Arachne challenged Athena to a weaving contest (and won!), talented spinsters and needlewomen have labored to perfect the delicate but sturdy art form that is lace.

I'll walk you through a brief history of this art form and discuss the ways that data scientists and machine learning experts can use their expertise to preserve art techniques that date, sometimes, to the Egyptians.

We'll then turn our attention to how using machine learning can benefit the private collector and the museum archive when working to catalog collections by helping to categorize and identify various types of lace.

Finally, we'll see how textile arts can benefit from machine learning algorithms to renew and refresh an art form that has always benefited from human ingenuity and creativity.
